Responsibilities
The Immunostains Laboratory performs three types of testing on
patient tissue samples for clinical diagnosis. These include
immunohistochemistry (IHC) which focuses on diagnostic protein
markers and predictive/prognostic markers, in-situ hybridization
(ISH) which is a technique used to bind a probe to a specific
DNA/or RNA sequence, and mass spectrometry based proteomic (MS)
tests. Specimens are received from surgical pathology, Mayo Clinic
practices, and Mayo Clinic Laboratories practice. The test menu
includes 295 IHC tests, 16 ISH tests and 3 MS tests. Each year
approximately 225,000 IHC tests, 7,500 ISH tests and 3,000 MS tests
are performed.

Histology Technician:
Performs a variety of technical procedures that result in the
creation of microscopic slide preparations. These technical
procedures may include accessioning specimens, specimen processing
and microtomy techniques, paraffin, frozen, and plastic. Technical
staining procedures include routine Hematoxylin and Eosin, special
stains, immunofluorescence, immunohistochemical staining, and in
situ hybridization. Participates in on-call rotations, including
weekends as needed.
Histotechnologist:
Prepares specimens and performs testing procedures on pathology
specimens that result in the creation of microscopic slide
preparations for diagnostic and/or prognostic analysis by the
pathologist. Applies technical theory to provide overall
operational support necessary to maintain and optimize testing
activities. -
*Individuals hired to this position are required to complete 2
years in this position before becoming eligible to apply to other
positions within Mayo Clinic.
**These positions are ineligible for visa sponsorship. Also, Mayo
Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension
