Position description

The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center Patient Navigator is a liaison between our patients and their families from Native American and Alaskan Native (NA/AN) communities and Mayo Clinic. The Patient Navigator maintains a web presence for ease of contact and assists the patient and their family members by identifying needs and facilitating connections which can decrease barriers to treatment and improve their overall experience. The Patient Navigator is proactive in contacting and assisting patients as well as the patient's care team. The Navigator remains current with resource and referral information and helps identify gaps in resources offered, working within their respective NA/AN community, as appropriate. This position may require minimal travel to tribal communities or clinical facilities.

The Patient Navigator works collaboratively with staff throughout Mayo Clinic and local service providers to enhance service and referral networks. The Patient Navigator is required to adhere to the ethical, compliance, and regulatory standards set forth for the enter/department/division/program and institution. This position requires the flexibility to work weekends and evenings when necessary. Must enjoy interacting with and serving a diverse patient population and thrive in a rapidly-changing, fast-paced environment. The Navigator is a professional member of the Mayo Clinic care team and committed to supporting and assisting team members with all patients as needed in addition to serving as the primary navigator for specific patient populations.

  • Bachelor's Degree or Associate's degree with 2-3 years of experience in communication, customer service, or patient care is required.
  • Prior experience working with targeted patient population and understanding and respect for that population's values and culture particularly with respect to health care and personal communications.
  • Prior experience working with public health programs or in health systems which serve American Indian/Alaska Natives or communities of color and demonstrated knowledge of respective cultures and religious needs is required.
  • Experience working with cancer patients of all ages and families preferred.
  • Awareness of and comfortability with connecting cancer patients and caregivers to local, regional and national resources.
  • Demonstrated listening, engaging and leadership skills is required.

Additional qualifications

  • Experience in a medical field, managed care or similar environment and knowledge of the Mayo system is strongly preferred.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work in a complex environment with multi-dimensional points of view.
  • The incumbent must be able to work effectively in a consensus-style operation that expects and promotes teamwork.
  • Must be comfortable with ambiguity, exhibit good decision making and judgment capabilities, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Must possess the ability to inspire trust and confidence, and communicate effectively with internal and external audiences.
  • Incumbent must be self-motivated, self-directed and highly organized, in particular be proactive with patient interactions, possess the ability and comfort level to anticipate patient and family needs and issues.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at a professional level with individuals of diverse backgrounds and roles inside and outside of Mayo.
  • Incumbent will promote a productive, collegial workplace and be a professional ambassador for Mayo Clinic.
  • Ability to prioritize work and handle a variety of tasks simultaneously is necessary in this position.
  • Belief in and committed to the Mayo Clinic mission and possess a strong ethical conduct is essential.
  • Working knowledge of scheduling procedures and ordering systems is preferred.
  • Must be proficient in information technology, MS Office products, and clinical applications.
  • An understanding of a complex healthcare system and the ability to educate patients and help set expectations.
  • Requires the ability to work collaboratively and professionally to build rapport with others at all levels of responsibility.

Compensation Detail

Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $25.59 per hour.
