Nurses working in the COVID Testing units collect specimens
(e.g. - Nasopharyngeal swab) from asymptomatic and symptomatic
people in an effort to confirm or rule-out the COVID 19 virus. The
swab units assist in fulfilling the testing recommendations of
COVID 19 for patients coming to Mayo Clinic for treatment/surgery
as well those in the community, including long term care facility
(LTCF) residents/employees, who may have symptoms of COVID 19 or
require testing to rule-out exposure to help facilitate quarantine
efforts as indicated based on results. Nurses work in a team
environment and rotate between various skills including ordering
testing in EPIC under the direction of the care provider,
collecting specimen and labeling, patient education, supply
ordering, educating employees of LTCF on proper swabbing procedure,
and critically thinking and assessing patients who may present
The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of
nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family
education and transitions of care.
The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice
settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the
patient and family.
The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which
includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and
communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The
ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for
the practice of the RN.
The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor
role, informal leadership roles, and quality improvement
The RN delegates patient care according to skill level,
experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and adequacy of
The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in
mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or
Student or Graduate of an Accreditation Commission for Education
in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education
(CCNE) or National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited associate's
degree, baccalaureate degree or diploma program.
If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by
ACEN, CCNE or NLN, at least one year of RN experience (within the
last five years) in an applicable care setting is required.
If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year
of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of
current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the
Department of Nursing with a RN start date after April 1, 2020,
must provide documented evidence of program completion of their
baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program
within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start
License or certification
Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
Maintains BLS (Basic Life Support) for Health Care Providers
from one of the following programs:
American Heart Associate
- American Red Cross
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with
internal equity when job offers are extended.
Hours / Pay period
Sunday - Saturday; primary hours between 8am-5pm
May cover any area as needed, including COVID swabbing,
immunizations and the clinic.
This is a limited tenure position, with a current end date of
12/31/2021. There will be opportunity to apply to other positions
following the conclusion of our testing needs.
