The Mayo Clinic Department of Pharmacy currently has five pharmacy
technician levels (I, II, III, IV, and V). Levels are based on a
variety of criteria such as certification, experience, and
education. Individuals can advance to higher levels through a
self-discipline process. External candidates may be hired to a
higher level if they already possess the specific requirements. The
minimum requirements listed below are the for the Pharmacy Tech I
level, which is the minimum that must be met for all levels.

Position description
Pharmacy Tech levels 1 - 5:
Assists the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care to
the patient. Accurately and efficiently processes prescriptions.
Interacts with patients and managed care plans to authorize
prescription coverage. Assembles prescriptions and follows proper
procedures to prepare and dispense medications. Accurately and
efficiently completes patient purchase transactions utilizing point
of sale systems. Assists with maintaining accurate medication
inventories and billing of medications. Effectively communicates
utilizing established systems and processes. Performs
responsibilities and duties of the job in a manner that is
attentive to age and ability considerations.
Qualifications
Note: These qualifications apply to the Pharmacy Tech level I,
which is the minimum qualification that must be met for all
levels.
High School diploma or equivalent
Additional qualifications
Effectively reads, writes, speaks and understands English. Able to
learn technical tasks. Able to follow written and verbal
directions. Able to apply math and calculator skills along with a
working knowledge of the metric system. Possess strong telephone
and verbal communication skills. Experience with the use of office
software computer applications and keyboarding.Prior experience as
an outpatient pharmacy technician. Demonstrated ability to work in
a busy environment and pay attention to detail. Proven
organizational and problem solving skills. Proven ability to
effectively work both independently and in a team environment.
No history of drug abuse or misuse; or proof of successful
completion of a certified drug abuse rehabilitation program is
required.
License or certification
Current registration with the Board of Pharmacy in the state he/she
is hired to work in where required by state regulation, or eligible
to obtain. May not perform duties requiring registration until
registration is obtained. National Pharmacy Technician
certification within 12 months of hire.

The Pharmacy Department has various Pharmacy Technician positions
available in multiple locations and schedules, The shifts are
dependent upon position availability at any given time. The FTE can
range from .5 - 1.0. Positions may be located at a variety of
Outpatient Pharmacy locations including St. Mary's, Methodist,
Downtown, and the 3551 Building. Qualified applicants are pooled
for consideration by any/all active hiring managers.
